                                         Advanced Book Repair Workshop

Sponsored by the North Carolina Preservation Consortium

Etherington Conservation Services, HF Group
Browns Summit, North Carolina
Saturday, March 24, 2007
9:30 AM – 4:30 PM

Outsourcing book repair may not be possible due to other demands on your
institution’s budget and could be more expensive when indirect costs of
vendor contracts, packing, shipping, and quality control are assessed.
Books shipped off site also increase the time material is unavailable for
reading, research, and exhibition. Well trained in-house staff can repair
damaged books in a cost effective, timely manner. Building on skills
learned in basic and intermediate book repair workshops participants will
learn more complex book repair techniques. The following topics will be
addressed with hands-on practice:
· Tools and equipment
· Workflow
· Adhesive properties
· Resewing
· Flat and rounded spines
· Recasing a book with a detached cover
· Making and attaching a new cover
· Repair and reinforce the text block and spine

This class is intended for collection care personnel in libraries,
archives, museums, historic sites, records centers, document depositories,
and other collection institutions as well as students and faculty in
library science, public history, and museum graduate programs. Previous
attendance at a basic and intermediate book repair class or an
apprenticeship under the supervision of a qualified book repair specialist
is required for registration. Procedures demonstrated in this class are
not intended for the repair of rare books or books in special collections.

Instructors
The instructors for this Advanced Book Repair workshop are Matthew
Johnson, Associate Conservator of Rare Books, and Sally Key, Senior Rare
Book Conservator at Etherington Conservation Services, a division of the
HF Group. Mr. Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the
University of North Carolina at Greensboro and studied book conservation
under Don Etherington. He is a member of the American Institute for
Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works and the Southeast Regional
Conservation Association. Mr. Johnson has worked at the Etherington
Conservation Center since 1993. Ms. Key completed a six year
apprenticeship in rare book conservation under William Anthony and Pamela
Spitzmueller at the University of Iowa. She also received a post-graduate
diploma in Medieval and Renaissance book conservation from West Dean
College in Chichester, UK, where she studied under Chris Clarkson. Her 15
years as a professional conservator has included positions at the
University of Iowa, the Iowa State Historical Society, and Southern
