Archives collections hold unique and irreplaceable documents,
photographs, maps, manuscripts, and other historical records of enduring
value. Implementing appropriate preservation policies and procedures
can prolong access and exhibition of these collections that record our
history and heritage. This workshop is an introduction to archives
preservation. The curriculum will address the nature of archives
collections, causes of material decay, preservation assessments,
processing and handling, environmental control, collection security,
conservation, disaster preparedness, and the selection of preservation
quality folders, boxes, and other archival supplies. Through
demonstration and hands-on practice participants will learn techniques
for:
* stabilizing materials
* segregating fragile items
* cleaning paper documents and maps
* flattening rolled maps and documents
* encapsulating items
* making protective enclosures
This workshop is open to staff and volunteers working in archives,
records centers, document repositories, libraries, museums, historic
sites, and other heritage institutions. Students in archives, public
history, library science, and related programs are also welcome to
attend.

The North Carolina Preservation Consortium (NCPC) is a 501C3 nonprofit
organization dedicated to the preservation of educational, historical,
cultural, and research collections in our state's archives, libraries,
museums, historic sites, document depositories, and record centers. NCPC
also informs the general public about preservation to safeguard private
collections and family treasures. Our preservation mission addresses the
proper care and handling of materials; storage and environmental
control; disaster preparedness and recovery; the repair, reformatting
and conservation of damaged items; and collection security. NCPC
supports the preservation of information content, and the medium as
artifact, in new and traditional formats for present and future
generations.

We would like to welcome your institution to the preservation
