Workshop Announcement: Special Collections Book Preservation

tuxedo box 3NCPC is partnering with the Society of North Carolina Archivists (SNCA) for a pre-conference workshop at UNCW’s Randall Library! As a complement to NCPC’s regular book repair workshops, this session will focus on caring for books in special collections. Larry Houston (pictured below), Preservation Librarian at East Carolina University’s Joyner Library, will lead instruction. Join in to learn new skills in creating supportive and protective enclosures for rare books and more.

Celebrate All Saints Day this year by learning how to preserve cemeteries in this two-day workshop. Jason Church is coming back to North Carolina to provide instruction on more intensive gravestone restoration methods, including cleaning and re-setting. The course will also cover broader preservation concepts such as planning and documentation.

NCPC’s 2018 annual conference will focus on collaborative initiatives that seek to preserve community history and material culture. Sessions will showcase projects throughout North Carolina and address the importance of effective outreach and building partnerships with individuals and community organizations to help them share their own stories. The conference will inspire participants with innovative techniques and tools for documenting and preserving local history resources and raise issues concerning the balance between community-building and collection-building.
