The North Carolina Preservation Consortium (NCPC) and the North Carolina Museums Council (NCMC) have joined forces to assist collecting institutions affected by disasters.
Purpose and Scope of Grant
To provide funds for collection supplies for institutions affected by disasters declared either by the state (North Carolina) or federal authorities. These include but are not limited to hurricanes, floods, tornados, wildfires, and earthquakes.
Funds will be awarded between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023. Applications are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis. Grants will be awarded until funds earmarked for the fiscal year are depleted.
Institutions affected by Federal and State declared disaster events from 2016 to present are eligible to apply for funding. Applications citing global pandemics, including Ebola and Covid-19, will not be accepted. Institutions affected by the following disasters should consider applying:
- Tropical Storm Fred (August 18, 2021; Governor Cooper executive order 227)
- Designated areas: Counties that declared local states of emergency include Haywood, Buncombe, Jackson, McDowell, Madison, Mitchell, Rutherford, Transylvania and Yancey
- Tropical Storm Eta (2020; Incident 4588) designated areas
- Hurricane Isaias (2020; Incident 3534) designated areas
- Hurricane Dorian (2019: Incident 4465) designated areas
- Hurricane Michael (2018; Incident 4412) designated areas
- Hurricane Florence (2018; Incident 4393) designated areas
- Western NC Floods/Alberto (2018)
- Guilford/Rockingham tornado (2018)
- Hurricane Matthew (2016)
Eligibility
Applicants must be institutional members of NCPC or NCMC, and must be within the declared North Carolina disaster areas as defined by FEMA or the Governor of North Carolina. Grants are not awarded to individuals.
Applicants must:
- Have legal custody of the collections that are the focus of the grant application.
- Have at least one staff member assigned the responsibility for overseeing the implementation and completion of the project for which grant funds are requested.
- Comply with the rules outlined in the Responsibilities of Disaster Relief Grant Recipients. A signed agreement must be submitted prior to work beginning.
- Agree to submit a short news article for publication in NC Preserves, the NCPC quarterly electronic newsletter. This article will also be shared with NCMC for publication. Article should be approximately 500-800 words with one photograph.
Spending restrictions
Maximum award is $1,000. NCPC and NCMC seeks to fund as many worthwhile grants as possible. Grant proposals of any amount up to $1,000 are welcome.
Grant projects may be funded in whole or in part at the discretion of the grant committee. Institutions that are awarded partial funding must agree to proceed with the project using their own or matching funds to make up the balance of the request. If no supplemental funding is available, the institution may re-apply when additional funding is identified.
Grant money must be spent on supplies, materials, or conservation treatment directly related to disaster recovery. No portion of a grant may be used for any indirect costs (overhead, facilities, administration, personnel, etc.) of the collecting institution or the parent organization.

Download and complete the NCPC/NCMC Disaster Relief Grant Application (MS Word). Applications and letters of support may be submitted by email or by U.S. Mail.
All required application materials must be received via email or postmarked between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023. Application and attachments must be in PDF or current Microsoft Word format.

Grant Timeline
FY2021-2022 Disaster Recovery Grant
- August 24, 2021 Grant Announced
- Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis
- Grants will be awarded until the allocated funds are spent for this fiscal year (July 1, 2021 – June 30, 2022)
- Selection Committee will review grants as received, and make a recommendation to the NCPC and NCMC boards within one month.
FY2020-2021 Disaster Recovery Grant

- May Day (May 1) 2020: Grant announced

- August 2020: Selection Committee submits report to Boards for approval

The Hurricane Relief Support Grant program was created May 2019 and ran through FY2020. In spring 2020, NCPC and NCMC reconfigured the grant to expand qualifying events to any state or federally declared disaster area within North Carolina.
