Currently Accepting Applications

The North Carolina Preservation Consortium (NCPC) and the North Carolina Museums Council (NCMC) have joined forces to assist collecting institutions affected by disasters.

Purpose and Scope of Grant

To support recovery efforts for institutions affected by Federal and State declared natural disaster events. These include but are not limited to hurricanes, tropical storms, floods, tornados, wildfires, and earthquakes. Applications citing pandemics will not be accepted.

Funds will be awarded between July 1 and June 30. Applications are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis. Grants will be awarded until funds earmarked for the fiscal year are depleted.

Eligibility

Applicants must be institutional members of NCPC or NCMC and must be within the declared North Carolina disaster areas as defined by FEMA or the Governor of North Carolina. Grants are not awarded to individuals.

Applicants must:

  • Have legal custody of the collections that are the focus of the grant application.
  • Have at least one member of the organization assigned the responsibility for overseeing the implementation and completion of the project for which grant funds are requested.
  • Apply within 3 years of having been impacted by a declared natural disaster.
  • If awarded a grant, applicants agree to submit a short news article to be shared with NCMC and NCPC for publication. Article should be approximately 500-800 words with one photograph.

Institutions awarded grants must comply with the rules outlined in the Responsibilities of Disaster Relief Grant Recipients. A signed grant agreement must be submitted to accept the award.

Spending Restrictions

The maximum award is $1,000. Grant proposals of any amount up to $1,000 are welcome.

NCPC and NCMC seek to fund as many eligible requests as possible. Grant requests may be funded in whole or in part at the discretion of the grant committee.  

Eligible grant expenses include but are not limited to:

  • Supplies/materials
    • Including but not limited to, archival storage containers, dehumidifiers, freezers, PPE, cleaning supplies, etc.
  • Conservation treatment directly related to disaster recovery.

Ineligible grant expenses include but are not limited to:

  • Indirect costs
  • Facilities
  • Personnel

Submitting an Application

Download and complete the NCPC/NCMC Disaster Relief Grant Application (MS Word). All required application materials must be received via email or via US mail postmarked between July 1 and June 30 of the current year.

Grant Timeline

  • July 1st Grant Application period opens
  • Applications accepted on a rolling basis. Grants will be awarded until the allocated funds are spent for this fiscal year (July 1 – June 30)
  • The Selection Committee will review grants as receive, and make a determination within approximately one-two months.
  • June 30th Grant Application period closes

The Hurricane Relief Support Grant program was created May 2019 and ran through FY2020. In spring 2020, NCPC and NCMC reconfigured the grant to expand qualifying events to any state or federally declared disaster area within North Carolina.
