The North Carolina Preservation Consortium (NCPC) and the North Carolina Museum Council (NCMC) have joined forces last year to create a two-year grant program to assist collecting institutions affected by Hurricanes Matthew, Florence, and Michael. NCPC and NCMC are happy to announce a second round of grants that includes support for member institutions who suffered damage due to Hurricane Dorian.

Purpose and Scope of Grant

To provide funds for collection supplies for institutions affected by Hurricane Matthew (September-October 2016), Hurricane Florence (September 2018), Tropical Storm Michael (October 2018), and Hurricane Dorian (September 2019).  Institutions within the North Carolina counties declared disaster areas that need collection preservation assistance are eligible to apply for this grant. Join instructor Annie Peterson, program leader at LYRASIS, to learn about a new tool designed for stewards of digital collections. The newly developed Digital Preservation Peer Assessment Framework will help participants understand the challenges of digital preservation, the ways that assessment can make those challenges more manageable, the steps of digital preservation assessment, and the tools to perform a basic peer assessment.

Cultural heritage collections typically contain photographs. Join instructor, Stephen Fletcher, Photographic Archivist for UNC’s North Carolina Collection, at Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, September 13 to learn how to care for these important visual documents. The production of different technical formats across the 19^th and 20^th centuries involved varying chemical processes. As they age, those formats require different preservation strategies. This workshop is an introduction to identifying a variety of types of photographs: daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, hand-colored silver gelatin prints, contemporary color, and digital photographs. Instruction will also focus on preservation methods and materials for proper handling, exhibition, and storage.
